Day3 ended in Heidelberg. After our wild night in Koblenz we approached Heidelber talking about beer festivals and its 'open' university. But first James needed some sun. It was quite interesting how different things motivated the group at different times. My main interests were the photography and looking after the car (at both of which I had mixed success.) For James it was to get to the Black Sea - at the start we had no idea how far we would get before we ran out of time, money, smashed the car up or got lost. (We had a standing joke about driving into Madrid or somewhere way off track and saying "Of course .... we should have turned left at Stuttgart"). So for the first half of the trip James was getting us up at crack of dawn (the frankfurter and egg breakfast was probably tied into this) and on to the road. He succeeded well at this - less so at the sun tan though. Once we had got to the Black Sea he slowed down - but then it was Pete's turn to drag us out of bed because he wanted to make sure we did not miss Venice.
