Day 10 and we came into Transylvania. Cluj was where we learned about currency trading in the East. In those days there were 14 Lei (the Romanian currency) to the £ - but for tourists there was a special rate of 42. However, there were hard currency shops in various places which sold highly prized 'Western' goods for hard currency. We soon learned that you could get substantially more than 42 Lei on the street. The only catch was that if you did not spend it in Romania you could not change it back - oh, and if you were caught, you would probably end up in jail. That rather tempered our enthusiasm for exploring this sort of activity further - we did not have much money either. We learned you could also sell jeans and stockings at a premium. Cluj also boasted the Catholic church of St Michael ..........
