And that's where the film ran out.

We had a ferry booked for the following day but decided that, if we could get on one the night before, we could be home by about midnight - and would not have to put up the tent again - such a relief after all these weeks! So we did that. In fact, James has reminded me, it was not quite as simple as that . To get back at a reasonable time we had to take a shorter crossing and so we went to Calais rather than Ostende - it was the same ferry company and we knew they would swap the tickets. Except they wouldn't. Or, at least, it took a few minutes of James' silken tongue to change their minds - and that's how we got the ferry home.

We had been on the road for 25 days and had travelled 4,636 miles in 13 countries (including England). The whole trip had cost £70 each. I remember going to bed looking forward to a night of real comfort - and then, after weeks sleeping on hard ground, wondering how one could possibly sleep in such a soft bed.

If you enjoyed the trip do let me know.
