I photographed this as an interesting
headstone in Cathays cemetery and then tried to read the inscription. It is not clear, but speaks of Thomas John Wall
who died in 1907, at the age of 22, from drowning in the River Taff near Llandaff. The inscription
around the edge is Independent Order of Rechabites SU. I know nothing more but (according to Wikipedia)
the latter is a fraternal organisation and friendly society founded in England in 1835 as part of the wider
temperance movement to promote total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. It is intriguing to wonder what happened
and how this all fits together.
