Not having a car meant we had to put the trip back a year. So my Dad sold me his and that's the one we used - that was it in the last picture. Now during the year two other guys joined us. Bill and Pete - they were just as posh as James but more down to earth. It was probably not long since they were William and Peter - but as 6th formers they became Bill and Pete. Anyway Bill worked at London Transport during the holiday and made us this real LONDON BUS sign which we displayed on the back of the car. This shot of it was taken in Bulgaria after some weeks so it was getting quite battered. In fact, towards the end of the trip we stopped hanging it on the back in case it got ruined or lost. I wonder if Bill still has it? It was full of in-jokes. The 49 bus went past the school, Warlingham was where Bill lived, the Rose and Crown was the pub by the school and Budapest and Sarajevo were places we were going to. Budapest was the centre of the Hapsburg empire - Sarajevo was where Archduke Ferdinand was shot (in the Balkans, as we kept reminding each other). The others had been studying the first world war for A-level - it meant little to me in fact - I was in a different year - but I soon picked it up.
