We made our way into 'Europe' on a cross channel ferry - that was the only way to go with a car in those days. The way the 'experts' (James' parents) said you did it was via Dover to Ostende - ok it was a long crossing (4½ hours) but it was worth it because it took you quickly onto the European motorway system. (And you avoided the nasty French motorways where you had to pay tolls.) Well, this was 'motoring' so that's what we did. James and I had been on 'passenger' ferries many times but this was my first on a car ferry and I think his first on one when he was driving. He was keen to drive on, or off, the ferry - so we did one way each. Actually, I was a bit twitchy because my longest ferry cross then was just 1½ hours - but it was a doddle!
