The other thing James' parents bought us was this tent - well they bought it for themselves and we were allowed to use it. It was pretty clever as it doubled as a roof rack and when you arrived at your camp site you pushed in the legs (tent posts) and drove the car out from underneath. Well it wasn't quite as simple as that in practice - but pretty good nonetheless. As you can see from the picture, taken on our first night, Bill and Pete were expert campers. The first night was at a place called Walkenburg. A part purpose of the trip was to go country 'bagging' (we did 13 in 3½ weeks). We had not planned to go to Holland, but we noticed on the map that there was a small bit sticking into Belgium - so we made a quick detour to include another country - and in fact ended up spending the night there. It was not far from the Aachen interchange - a crossing place in history - and a place with a small but significant part in my life.
